Lancers Breakthrough To Semifinals
LOS ANGELES -- Joseph Moorman has made making the big save normal in his two-year career at California Baptist and the sophomore came through in a big way, making 20 saves as the sixth-seeded Lancers upset No. 3 seed Air Force, 15-12, in the second game of the 2014 Western Water Polo Association Championships at LMU's Burns Aquatics Center.
Moorman set the stage early with six first quarter saves to give the Lancers a big lead and then added six more in the fourth quarter to keep it as they advance to the semifinals and take on No. 1 seed UC San Diego in the first semifinal on Saturday at 11:15 am. No. 4 seed LMU will take on No. 2 seed UC Davis in the second semifinal at 1 pm.
Brent Teraoka powered the Lancer offense with five goals as California Baptist took a 6-2 lead on a Teraoka goal with 1:58 to play in the second quarter.
Air Force would fight back, cutting it to 6-4 at the break.
California Baptist then looked to pull away for good with six straight goals to take a 12-4 lead with 4:15 to play in the third quarter.
Air Force wasn't done as they cut the lead to 13-11 on Clint Walling's fourth goal of the game with 2:08 to play. Teraoka would add a key insurance goal to help the Lancers advance.
