
































Lions Knock-Off 5-Time Champ UCLA
Loyola Marymount University knocked-off the five-time defending national champion UCLA, 5-4, in the first round of the NCAA tournament to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA championships. The Lions dropped a pair of tough games to finish ranked fifth nationally in 2010. WWPA first-team goalie Kristine Cato was huge for the Lions, posting 11 saves and forcing the Bruins into a 1-for-8 day on the 6-on-5. For the whole story, go HERE. WWPA CHAMPIONSHIP
Mary Ann Campos scored five goals to lead LMU to its eighth WWPA Championship with a 13-10 win over UC San Diego in the title game on May 2 to earn the automatic bid to the National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championships at San Diego State May 14-16. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE FINAL DAY:
•Cal State Bakersfield’s Kaitlin Torres scored with five seconds remaining to lift the Roadrunners to an 8-7 win over Colorado State in the third place game. Colorado State’s Kallie Berry, who had three goals to lead all scorers, tied the game with 49 seconds to play.
•Cal State East Bay’s Jenna Casady scored with 4:17 to play to break a 8-8 tie. Her goal was the game winner to earn 5th place with a 9-8 win over Santa Clara. Elizabeth Warren finished with 5 goals to pace CSUEB.
•Sonoma State took Seventh Place with a 7-5 win over Cal State San Bernardino. Laurel Stricklin had two goals and Gina Uliana made eight saves.
•Cal State Monterey Bay earned a 9-2 win over Chapman to claim Ninth Place. Eight different players scored for CSUMB in the win.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM DAY 2:
•The Lions continued to score in bunches, earning an 18-5 win over Cal State Bakersfield. Diana Romero (#9 on the left) scored three goals, along with Kimberly Benedetti, who has eight goals in two games on the tournament. The Lions advance to the title game for the 10th straight year.
•UC San Diego made three straight title games from 2002-2004, and return for the first time since with a 14-8 win over Colorado State. Kristen Bates scored four times and Stephanie Heinrich added three in the win. The Tritons scored 10 goals in the second and fourth quarters combined.
•CSU East Bay scored four of the games final five goals to break open a 9-9 tie to defeat Sonoma State 13-10 in game #12.
•Santa Clara won their second game of the day, defeating CSU San Bernardino in Game #11, 10-5. Rochelle Stowe and Caitlin Espe had three goals each.
•Twelve different Broncos scored as Santa Clara cruised to a 20-2 win over Chapman in Game #7.
•The battle of the Bays saw Cal State East Bay defeat Cal State Monterey Bay 9-7. Elizabeth Warren and Claire Pierce each had three goals in the win.
