Sydney Gstettenbauer of UC San Diego and Kaitlin Hartman of Cal State San Bernardino have been named the final WWPA Women’s Players of the Week for 2009 after lifting their teams to big conference wins last week. Gstettenbauer scored 11 goals, netting seven goals in just three periods during the 20-8 win over Chapman. She added four goals against No. 7 San Diego State. She leads the Tritons with 72 goals. As for Hartman, she surpassed the 100-goal mark for the season by scoring five goals including the match-winner in an 8-7 win over Sonoma State. Her 100th goal of the season was the match-winner. She then scored five of the team’s six goals in the 17-6 loss to No. 13 Cal State Northridge.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - April 15

ANNE SCOTT

Loyola Marymount

Loyola Marymount junior Anne Scott has been named the Western Water Polo Association Women’s Player of the Week for April 15 after helping the Lions to an 11-9 win over WWPA foe UC San Diego. Scott scored four goals for the Lions, including the final goal of the come-from-behind win. The win gives the Lions a 10-0 record against WWPA foes on the season. With the four goals, which was a career-best in a single game, Scott is second on the team with 45.


WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - April 8

AMANDA ORTIZ

Cal State Bakersfield

Cal State Bakersfield’s Amanda Ortiz has been named the Western Water Polo Association Women’s Player of the Week for April 8 after helping the Roadrunners to a 3-1 record last weekend, including a win over No. 6 San Jose State. Ortiz tallied 13 goals in four games over the weekend as the Roadrunners went 3-1 at the Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif. The program’s all-time leading goal scorer found the back of the net four times against Colorado State and No. 10 Loyola Marymount. She also had a hat trick against Sonoma State on Sunday to go along with five steals and three drawn ejections. Against No. 6 San Jose State, Ortiz had a pair of goals to go along with two assists. She also drew three ejections including a five-meter penalty shot to help CSUB to a 12-11 upset.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - April 1

LIZ WARREN

Cal State East Bay

Liz Warren of Cal State East Bay has been named the Western Water Polo Association Women’s Player of the Week for April after leading CSUEB to a 4-0 record at the Wheaton Invitational this last weekend. The two-meter sophomore scored 14 goals in the four victories over Wheaton, Carthage, Macalester and Loyola-Chicago.  She also had six drawn ejections, seven steals, and four assists.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - March 25

KRYSTYNA McCRIGHT

Colorado State

Junior goalie Krystyna McCright of Colorado State has been named the Western Water Polo Association Women’s Player of the Week for March 24 after helping Colorado State to a 4-0 record last weekend at the Cal Baptist Tournament. McCright was solid in net, helping the Rams to a 6-3 win over Wagner, a 12-7 win over CSUSB, a 5-4 at Redlands and an 8-2 win over Cal Baptist. She made 42 saves on the weekend with nine steals. On average she made 10.5 saves per contest while allowing just 4.0 goals per game.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - March 18

NICOLE HUGHES

Loyola Marymount

Senior Nicole Hughes scored 24 goals in four games at the LMU Invitational last weekend to earn Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week honors for March 18. Hughes had a record breaking weekend in scoring six goals against Colorado State, three goals against No. 19 Indiana, seven against Sonoma State and eight against Princeton. In the win over Sonoma State, she set the all-time school record for goals in a career, breaking Lucy Windes record of 249. In the win over Princeton, her  eight goals broke her own record for goals in a single game. She now has 59 goals on the season and 250 in her career.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - March 11

CLAIRE LINNEY

Santa Clara

Senior Claire Linney of Santa Clara has been named the WWPA Women’s Player of the Week (March 11) for her performance last weekend. She scored the  tying goal with 11 seconds left in the fourth quarter for the Broncos versus CS Bakersfield. Her last second goal took the game into overtime, and SCU defeated CSUB in a sudden death third overtime period. The Santa Cruz, Calif., native tallied four steals, three kick-outs and two goals at 2-meter defender versus Bakersfield and Davis at the Aggie Shootout.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - March 4

BRYANNA BURNS

CS San Bernardino

Bryanna Burns was a force in the cage for the Coyotes in their four matches at the Chapman University tournament, recording 64 saves as the Coyotes defeated Whittier, LaVerne and Occidental and lost narrowly to Cal State East Bay. Burns had 16 saves in a 15-12 win over Whittier and 18 saves against LaVerne in the Coyotes 18-2 romp over the Leopards on Saturday. On Sunday, she had 16 saves in a 11-9 loss to Cal State East Bay and 14 saves in a 9-8 win over Occidental. She was a member of the WWPA all-freshman team in 2008.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Feb. 25

NILA WARD

UC Santa Cruz

Junior Defender Nila Ward of UC Santa Cruz has been named the Western Water Polo Association Women’s Player of the Week for Feb. 25. Ward led the team in minutes played and was the primary center defender in all three games, helping UCSC go 2-1 on the weekend.  She scored nine goals, had four assists, two field blocks, eleven steals and drew five ejections in wins over Azusa Pacific and Redlands.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Feb. 18

KALLIE BERRY

Colorado State

Colorado State’s Kallie Berry has been named the Western Water Polo Association Women’s Player of the Week for Feb. 18 for helping the Rams go 3-1 on the week at the CSUB Roadrunner Invitational. Berry scored 10 goals with three assists, three steals and three ejections drawn in leading the Rams to an 11-3 win over Fresno Pacific, a 11-5 win over Cal State Monterey Bay and a 12-11 win over Cal State East Bay. The two wins over the Cal State teams puts CSU’s record in the WWPA at 4-0.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Feb. 11

NICOLE HUGHES

Loyola Marymount

Senior Heather Hughes scored 15 goals in four games in the UCSD Triton Invitational in LMU’s opening weekend of play. She led the Lions to a 3-1 start to the season with three of the four games coming against ranked opponents. She scored five goals in the wins over Cal Baptist and #15 Long Beach State on Saturday and then scored three in the win over #8 Michigan. In addition, she drew 15 kickouts, had eight steals and four assists. The Lions moved from No. 11 in the nation to No. 9 after the weekend.
