WWPA Weekly Release No. 2 (Sept. 13, 2017)

SANTA CLARA'S REILLEY MAY NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Leading his team to three wins in four games last weekend at the Princeton Invitational, Santa Clara junior utility Reilley May has been selected as the Western Water Polo Association's Player of the Week on Sept. 13, the league office announced. May, who earned his first career WWPA weekly honor, was a key contributor in the Broncos' success in New Jersey, posting eight goals on 8-of-11 shooting, six steals, and two assists, while drawing 10 kickouts in the four games.

The finance major from San Francisco scored in all four games for Santa Clara, including a career-high four goals in a 12-7 win over Navy, which was receiving votes in the national poll, to close out the tournament, while adding a season-best four kickouts and two goals in an 11-8 win over Fordham. The two-time WWPA and ACWPC All-Academic Team selection also added single goals against Iona and the No. 11-ranked Tigers.

Also nominated: Ido Goldschmidt (UC Davis), Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt (UC San Diego), Jonny Lotero (Cal Baptist).

IN THE RANKINGS: Seven of the league's eight members are listed in the most recent Collegiate Water Polo Association rankings released on Sept. 13. Defending conference champion UC Davis remained at No. 9, and is joined in the top 20 by UC San Diego (No. 13), Cal Baptist (No. 15), and Loyola Marymount (No. 20). Santa Clara (four votes), Air Force (three), and Concordia (three), are all among those receiving votes in this week's poll.

AROUND THE ASSOCIATION...

AIR FORCE FALCONS (0-4, 0-0 WWPA)
After week off, the Falcons jump back in the pool by making a trip to California to take on Cal Lutheran and #7 UC Santa Barbara this weekend. Air Force hasn't played since Labor Day weekend at the Triton Invitational.

CAL BAPTIST LANCERS (5-1, 0-0 WWPA)
The road ahead is a tough one for the Lancers, who open WWPA play at #9 UC Davis, before staying in Northern California to participate in Aggie Roundup where they will take on a trio of ranked opponents. Winners of five of its first six, Cal Baptist opens against #5 Pacific and takes on No. 9 (D-III) MIT on Friday, before closing the tournament against #2 USC on Saturday.

CONCORDIA EAGLES (6-3, 0-1 WWPA)
The Eagles have already matched their entire win total from the 2016 season, leading the league with six wins overall, and we're just two weeks into this year's campaign. After dropping its inaugural WWPA match to UC San Diego last week, but finishing 3-1 at the Inland Empire Classic with its only loss to #8 Pepperdine, Concordia makes the short drive across town to take on city rival UC Irvine in its only match of the week on Friday (Sept. 15).

FRESNO PACIFIC SUNBIRDS (1-3, 0-0 WWPA)
The Sunbirds have had a week to prepare for their 2017 WWPA openers, welcoming #13 UC San Diego and #20 Loyola Marymount to the Central Valley on Sept. 14 and 16, respectively. Its the first of three-straight league games for Fresno Pacific, which opened the year on Labor Day weekend with a 1-3 record at the Triton Invitational.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT LIONS (2-4, 0-0 WWPA)
Following a pair of contests against top-15 opponents last weekend, the Lions travel to Fresno Pacific to open their WWPA schedule on Sept. 16 in their only match of the week. Loyola Marymount dropped a pair of contests at the GCC/WWPA Conference Challenge Cup in Malibu, Calif., last weekend, falling to No. 8 Pepperdine and #11 UC Irvine.

SANTA CLARA BRONCOS (3-2, 0-0 WWPA)

The Broncos are receiving votes in this week's CWPA poll -- the first team ranked outside the top 20. Junior utilty Reilley May finished with eight goals at the Princeton Invitational to lead Santa Clara, including four in a win over (RV) Navy to earn WWPA Player of the Week honors.

UC DAVIS AGGIES (4-2, 0-0 WWPA)
After splitting a pair of games, including going head-to-head with top-ranked and defending national champion California, it's a busy week for the #9 Aggies, who host their WWPA opener against #15 Cal Baptist, before welcoming 10 teams for the 23-game Aggie Roundup. UC Davis faces #6 Long Beach State and #8 Pepperdine to start its own tournament, closing on Sunday against Redlands, which is ranked No. 5 in the country in the CWPA poll among Division III schools.

UC SAN DIEGO TRITONS (2-5, 1-0 WWPA)
The early conference leader after defeating Concordia in the WWPA opener, the Tritons face Fresno Pacific on the road before heading to the Bay Area to take on top-ranked California in Berkeley, Calif.
