BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior utility Ido Goldschmidt and sophomore attacker Holden Tamblyn each scored two goals, but ninth-ranked UC Davis was unable to keep pace with the defending NCAA champions, falling by a 15-10 final to top-ranked California in collegiate men's water polo action at Spieker Aquatics Complex Wednesday night.

The Aggies move to 3-2 for the season. The Golden Bears stay unbeaten at 5-0.

Six other UC Davis players – Brock Gordon, Jack Stafford, Morgan Olson-Fabbro, Riley Venne, Spencer Galli and Marcus Anderson – also chipped in one goal apiece. Goldschmidt and Anderson each scored on five-meter penalty opportunities while Stafford, Olson-Fabbro and Galli each finished Aggie power plays.

For California, junior attacker Johnny Hooper netted four goals, including two in his team's 4-0 start. Junior Odysseas Masmanidis and senior Luca Cupido each performed hat tricks. Cupido scored all three of his goals in the third frame.

UC Davis surrendered four unanswered to open the contest before Goldschmidt broke the scoreless stretch with his five-meter conversion. Tamblyn's goal with 1:29 left in the second quarter helped the Aggies stay to within a 7-4 deficit, but Hooper's 6-on-5 finish on the next trip down set the board at 8-4 for halftime, then scores by Masmanidis and Cupido extended the Cal lead to 10-4.

The Aggies fought back to a four-goal deficit on two occasions in the second half. Stafford completed a 6-on-5 chance mid way through the third to bring the score to 10-6. Anderson's penalty goal made it 14-10 with 1:41 left in the game, but Cal kept its guest at arm's length throughout.

UC Davis returns to action for its home opener against San Jose State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
