Women's Water Polo - Mon, Apr. 24, 2017

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- For the second consecutive week, Mercyhurst senior Becky Insalaco has been selected as the KAP7 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Women's Player of the Week for the week of Apr. 17-23, it was announced Monday.

Insalaco, a native of Chicago, Ill., propelled the Lakers to an 11-8 victory over crosstown rival and WWPA-foe Gannon in the only conference game played by either team in 2017.  Insalaco scored five goals and added two assists on offense while drawing three ejections and grabbing five steals on defense.

It is the first time in WWPA women's history that a player has been selected as the WWPA Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks in the same season.  Former UCSD goalie Courtney Miller was also selected as the Player of the Week on back-to-back weeks, but she earned the award on the final week of the 2013 season, then again the first week of the 2014 season.

Also of note, UC San Diego's Lauren Boyer captured the Harper Cup Most Valuable Player award Saturday after leading the Tritons to their second consecutive Harper Cup title with a convincing 10-6 upset victory over crosstown rival and 11th-ranked San Diego State.  Boyer led all scorers with five goals for her 11th hat trick of the season and contributed defensively with drawing three exclusions, one of which was a five-meter penalty call.  Sonoma State's Cassidy Mundt also had an outstanding effort this past week, scoring three goals and adding an assist to lead the Seawolves to an 8-6 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in WWPA action on Friday.

Looking ahead to this week, all six WWPA teams will converge on the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio for the 2017 WWPA Women's Championship, set for this Friday through Sunday.  This year's event will be hosted by Mercyhurst.  The teams will compete for the WWPA title and the opportunity to capture the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championships on May 12-14 at the University of Indiana Natatorium in Indianapolis.

The tournament seedings were just announced earlier today and you can find more information about the WWPA Women's Championship by clicking here or going to the official web site of the WWPA at www.thewwpa.com.
