ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Gannon University junior Alison Cooney has been selected as the KAP7 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Women's Player of the Week for the week of Mar. 6-12, it was announced Wednesday.
Cooney, a native of Erie, Pa., went off for 16 goals in three games over the weekend at the George Washington Invitational, throwing in five goals in each of the first two games, followed by a six-goal effort to wrap up the tournament. She now leads the WWPA in goals per game, averaging 3.0 per contest and is second in the conference in total goals with 45, one behind UC San Diego's Lauren Boyer. Cooney now has 129 career goals for the Golden Knights and is just three goals from topping her total from last season.
This is Cooney's fourth-career WWPA Player of the Week award, she earned the award twice as a freshman in 2015, and once as a sophomore last year in 2016.
Looking ahead to this week, Cal State East Bay (9-6) will be the only team in action, taking part in the Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday and Sunday in Bakersfield, Calif. Cal State Monterey Bay (6-7), Gannon (7-8), Mercyhurst (4-10), Sonoma State (6-15) and UC San Diego (11-12) have the week off.
