ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Gannon University freshman Campbell Ruh has been selected as the KAP7 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Women's Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 13-19, it was announced Tuesday.
Ruh, a native of Walnut, Calif., had an outstanding weekend on both sides of the ball to contribute to the Golden Knights' 2-2 record at the Mercyhurst Invitational in Erie, Pa. She registered 11 goals and three assists on offense while drawing 11 exclusions and recording six steals on defense over the weekend, in addition to winning two of the three sprints she participated in.
Ruh opened the weekend with four goals, two assists and six drawn exclusions Saturday morning against the Virginia Military Institute before tallying two goals, an assist, two steals, two earned ejections and went 2-0 in sprint-offs later in the day to help Gannon defeat Siena. On Sunday, she piled on two more goals, three drawn exclusions and two steals in a win over St. Francis before ending the week with a hat trick against Bucknell.
Also of note, Gannon junior Alison Cooney exploded for 14 goals, including four scores in three straight games, handing out one assist in addition to drawing five exclusions in four games for the Golden Knights. Mercyhurst senior Becky Insalaco netted 13 goals, had 13 drawn exclusions and grabbed six steals in three games, including an eight-goal effort on Saturday against Siena. Cal State East Bay senior goalie Nikki Vaughan also made an impact this past weekend, making nine saves and nabbing four steals in an 11-9 victory over Fresno Pacific on Saturday.
Looking ahead to this week, Cal State East Bay (4-5) will take part in the Tina Finale Invitational Friday through Sunday in Thousand Oaks, Calif., Cal State Monterey Bay (4-3) will be in Santa Clara Saturday to take on UC Davis and host Santa Clara, Gannon (2-6) and Mercyhurst (1-6) will both take part in the Penn State Behrend Invitational in Erie, Pa., and UC San Diego (4-5) will compete at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at UC Irvine beginning Friday. Sonoma State (3-11) is idle this week.
