71 WWPA Players Earn
National Honors
The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches released the 2009 Men’s All-Academic Awards and 71 student-athletes from the 13 WWPA programs were on the three respective teams - Outstanding (4.00-3.71 GPA), Superior (3.70-3.41) and Excellent (3.40-3.00 GPA). In addition, five programs earned Team Cumulative GPA honors, including Pomona-Pitzer College, who ranked fourth with a 3.327 Cumulative GPA.
51 Student-Athletes Honored by ACWPC
There were 51 student-athletes from the Western Water Polo Association honored by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches in the 2010 Women’s All-Academic Awards. The ACWPC honors athletes in three teams, with first-team earning Outstanding honors (4.00-3.71 GPA), second-team earning Superior honors (3.70-3.41) and third-team earning Excellent honors (3.40-3.20). In addition, the ACWPC honors the team academic awards, with Chapman ranking second among all collegiate water polo teams with a 3.45 GPA. Cal State East Bay (3.10) and Cal State Bakersfield (3.03) joined the Panthers on that list.
Loyola Marymount University knocked-off the five-time defending national champion UCLA, 5-4, in the first round of the NCAA tournament to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA championships. The Lions dropped a pair of tough games to finish ranked fifth nationally in 2010. WWPA first-team goalie Kristine Cato was huge for the Lions, posting 11 saves and forcing the Bruins into a 1-for-8 day on the 6-on-5. For the whole story, go HERE.
