Lions Earn Three-Peat

Men's water polo claims third straight WWPA title with 5-4 win over rival UC San Diego.

Tournament Central

Loyola Marymount's Max Schlegel broke a 4-4 tie, scoring a goal with 4:01 left in the fourth quarter and the Lions held on to win their third consecutive WWPA championship with a 5-4 victory over U.C. San Diego. WWPA Player of the Year and championships MVP Andy Stevens was brilliant in goal, making 14 saves, including all four of the Tritons' shots on goal in the fourth.

Schlegel's goal gave LMU its first lead of the game, although it was never far behind. U.C. San Diego jumped on top with a 1-0 lead after one quarter thanks to a goal by Peter Gresham.

The top-seeded Lions rallied in the second quarter to even the score heading into halftime. All-Tournament selection Andrew Aki knotted the game at 2 with 3:14 to play in the half. UCSD again took leads of 3-2 and 4-3 in the third quarter on back-to-back goals from Sean Cruz. LMU's Tibor Forai tied the game at 4 with 26 seconds to play in the third.

Tritons' goalie David Morton was tough, as well, making four of his nine saves in the fourth quarter to keep the game close.

LMU, ranked No. 5 in the nation, earns the WWPA's automatic berth to the NCAA national championships hosted by Princeton University on Dec. 5-6.
