UC San Diego senior goalkeeper Kim Hockett has played a key role in the recent success of the No. 17 Tritons. Hockett made 11 saves in Saturday’s 9-7 upset win over No. 12 Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. In Wednesday’s narrow 7-5 loss to No. 4 Hawaii, Hockett collected 12 stops. With 266 saves in 2008, Hockett is just nine away from becoming UCSD’s single season record holder in that category. The Lake Elsinore native currently sits in the top 10 nationally for her save total.

UC Davis
Christi Raycraft of UC Davis has been named the WWPA Women’s Player of the Week for April 9 after leading the Aggies to a 5-0 week. She opened the weekend with a career-high six goals and two steals in the Aggies’ 14-3 win over Colorado State. Followed that with a total of six goals, seven steals, eight drawn kickouts and six field blocks in the two-day Aggie Shootout. Among the highlights from the tourney including a four-goal performance (in just eight minutes) during UC Davis’ 14-4 win over Cal State East Bay, and three drawn exclusions with four blocks in a key 9-7 conference win over No. 11 Loyola Marymount. Total stats for the weekend: 5 games, 12 goals, 1 assist, 9 steals, 8 drawn exclusions, 1 drawn five-meter exclusion and 6 field blocks. UC Davis went 5-0, outscoring its opponents by a 61-28 margin.

Nicole Hughes of Loyola Marymount has been named the Western Water Polo Association Women’s Player of the Week for scoring nine goals in two wins over the weekend. The junior continues to score in bunches as she scored four in a 9-4 win over No. 15 Cal State Northridge and then five more in a key 16-10 win in WWPA action against Cal State Bakersfield. She scored her nine goals on just 13 attempts for a shooting percentage of .692. She has now scored 38 goals in the last 10 games, 21 of which have come against five nationally ranked programs.

Amanda Ortiz has been named the WWPA Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week for March 26 for leading the Roadrunners’ offense as they picked up a 12-8 win over Wagner College and an 8-5 win over Marist College to improve to 15-11 on the season. Ortiz had four goals against Wagner and three against Marist, bringing her season goal total to 72. The junior also contributed a pair of assists and five steals while dawing a combined 12 ejections, inlcuding two 5-meters.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Mar. 19

Cal State East Bay
Mary Rosa of Cal State East Bay has been named the WWPA Player of the Week of March 18 after leading her team to wins over Concordia and CS Monterey Bay. She scored six goals and had five steals in a key 10-8 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in WWPA action. She scored a total of 11 goals in the three games on the week. Rosa has 35 goals on the season and has a twin sister (Ana) who is also on the team. CS East Bay actually has two sets of identical twins playing for them this season.

Nicole Hughes of LMU averaged 3.5 goals per game over the weekend, gathering a total of 14 goals in four games at the LMU Invitaitonal to earn WWPA Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week honors for Mar. 12. The Lions went 3-1 on the weekend, including a 9-8 overtime win over No. 7 UC Davis. In that win she had four goals, two steals and two kickouts drawn. She also had four goals against Colorado State and three against Santa Clara and three more against Chapman.

Amy Lamb of Santa Clara has been named the Western Water Polo Association Women’s Player of the Week for March 5 for leading her team to a 4-0 record last week. In those four games, she had 10 goals, seven assists, two steals and a kickout drawn. Her best game came in a win over Sonoma State where she recorded four goals and three assists.

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Feb. 27

Samantha Burchard of Sonoma State helped the Seawolves to a 3-0 record at their own Seawolf Splash to be named the Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week for Feb. 27. She scored three goals in a win over Cal Lutheran, two in a 11-9 win over Cal State Monterey Bay and then six in a 11-10 win over Pacific. The six goals against the Tigers set a school record for goals in a game. She finished the three games with 11 goals.

Veronica Campbell of Cal State Bakersfield has been named the Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week for Feb. 20 after leading the Roadrunners to a 3-1 record over the weekend. The goalie made 61 saves in four games, including 23 in an 8-6 win over UC Santa Cruz. She also had five steals and two assists

WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Feb. 13

Junior Nicole Hughes of Loyola Marymount has been named the Western Water Polo Association Women’s Player of the Week of Feb. 13 after guiding the Lions to a second place finish at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The Lions went 3-1 on the week, defeating Cal Baptist, No. 15 UC San Diego at their home pool and No. 9 UC Irvine. The Lions fell to No. 6 San Diego State, 10-9, on a last second goal. Hughes scored 11 goals on just 16 attempts (69 percent). She added six steals and nine kickouts drawn. She scored four goals against Cal Baptist, three against UC San Diego and three more against UC Irvine. She leads the Lions with 14 goals in five games. The wins allowed the Lions to jump from No. 12 to No. 9 in the nation in the latest poll.

Becky Seelos of Cal Stae Bakersfield has been named the first Western Water Polo Association Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week in 2008 for scoring 10 goals in the four games at the Roadrunner Mini Tournament last weekend. She neeted three goals against UC Santa Barbara, four against Long Beach State, two against Cal State Northridge and one against Fresno Pacific. She added five steals and drew four ejections.
